Machine Learning (ML) is a rapidly growing field of the computer science that has far reaching applications even outside the academics and specialized industries. Thanks to the Big Data (r)evolution, Machine Learning is becoming popular even in smaller businesses. Moreover, there are many tools and projects that allow running ML algorithms even by enthusiasts without a mathematical or statistical background.

In this presentation we will show some of the most common ML algorithms together with their prevalent use cases and we will demonstrate them on very simple examples. We will also discuss a possible integration with Db2.

 Objectives:

 1.        A very brief introduction into ML and basic ideas.

 2.        A very brief introduction into the available machine learning tools.

 3.        Discuss the typical use cases on simple examples.

Emil Kotrc is a principal software engineer at CA Technologies working in Prague Technology Center since 2005. He started on Resource management products for Mainframe and later moved into Database management for DB2 for z/OS development. Before joining CA Technologies, Emil worked in an academic environment.

IMS has been around for 50 years already. After half a century, is there some way to make our lives with IMS more attractive? This is the question we will try to answer. This presentation will be more of a showcase of how to use modern tools with IMS. We will examine different use cases with the help of tools like Zowe and Visual Studio code. Using these tools, we will try to perform daily routine tasks without touching a "GREEN SCREEN", in the same way as other "modern" database systems. Is this even possible? Come and see!

Radek Mrvec joined CA Technologies (which was acquired by Broadcom in 2018) in 2012 as an Associate Software Engineer and I was assigned to the CA ACF2 security product. A year later I was re-assigned to CA Database Management Solutions for IMS for z/OS (IMS Tools). Nowadays, I am still working in the CA IMS Tools team as a Principal Software Engineer, involved in new development and sustaining work across the whole CA IMS Tools portfolio.

In this session we will discuss the special features of "IMS Connect":

- what the basic installation offers me

- how do I react to "problems" within IMS Connect?

What tools are available?

- What do they offer (using IMS Connect Extensions as an example)?

- How do I integrate them?

- Procedure based on an example (best practice)

Skandia – API for better business.

Skandia has a long history of business innovation and holds a healthy position in the Swedish insurance market. Even with a dominating market share in our segment we see the opportunity to leverage the digital friendly market climate in the Nordic region. Our size and scale as well as our legacy of course makes this a challenge, but we can at the same time make an impact in the market considering our volume of customers.

Why API?

Skandia’s most valuable assets resides in the Mainframe. Of course, we are referring to our large customer base and our core application with tailored business logic. That’s the engine that drives Skandia’s business. API enablement is our way to reach the full potential of these investments.  We will exemplify a few simple but effective customer use cases that improves our customer experience and add value.

Our Way:

Generations of innovative inhouse development has led to the conclusion that we don’t want to build our own home maid unique solution to a problem that many others have. Still we want to reclaim that innovative edge. We searched for a product to that could give us a head start in this journey.  z/OS Connect met our needs that we had drawn in our blueprint. An ambitious plan, and some hazards along the way, so we are happy to do it with a solid partner like IBM.

Today:

We have an API ready production environment and services will be published step by step. We start small but build for scalability and release service by service.

Effects:

A commitment to the “API way” has a direct impact on your organisation. Some expected, some not…

New demands for “Event Driven Architecture”, Monitoring on a new level and new Security requirements are just some examples. Not to forget - Business/IT relations – When IT takes the helm of the company’s customer interaction - someone will oppose.

Robert Blomquist – Head of Solution Center Mainframe & Java at Skandia.

Robert has managed  IT-solutions in Insurance Industry  for over 20 years, covering multiple technologies and phases. Now promoting a renewed mainframe strategy and agile ways of working to get the most return of investment.

Jerker Emilsson – Senior Solution Architect at Skandia.

Jerker started as IT professional on the distributed domain before plunging in to the core Mainframe some 15 years ago, not regretting a single moment.

Background in Assembler & Cobol development now focusing on Mainframe DevOps, Modernization and API enablement

z/OS Connect Enterprise Edition is the strategic enabler for integrating IBM Z within the API economy. We start a demo based on the IMS PhoneBook application showing how to consume a REST API from an IMS application. We use a Cloudant API to call from the IMS PhoneBook program using z/OS Connect EE. We then discuss some of z/OS Connect EE and IMS outbound security considerations.

Audience level: intermediate

Aymeric Affouard is a Certified IT Specialist working in the IBM Systems Center - Lab Services in Montpellier France.
