Session Evaluation

The Open Mainframe Project Zowe technology is celebrating its 7th year since it was first launched with the mission to make z/OS easier and more familiar to operate to folks who hadn’t grown up with the platform. This talk will show the scenarios that have gotten market traction with customers and will be co-presented with Emma Skovgard from Dank Bank. These range from ad-hoc scripting, automation, DevOps pipelines and CI/CD with or without Ansible and source code management repositories, as well Visual Studio and IntelliJ extensions opening the aperture on mainframe file access by bringing these powerful IDEs into the field of play. By leveraging VS Code alongside other open source tooling it’s possible to build a modern intuitive software stack that not only opens up the world of JCL, REXX and CICS to rich GUI development, but brings into play python, GoLang, node.js and newer unix based languages and runtimes.

Session Evaluation

Have you ever watched a movie where everything is going along OK until the line “It’s running on a mainframe” or “Let’s hack the mainframe” is spoken, after which you find yourself torn between laughter and disbelief ? If so then this session is for you. We’ll show even though mainframes vary from being worshipped, mocked, and belittled in the IT world, Hollywood understands us and promotes mainframes as the superheroes’ IT platform of choice. From Will Smith, Jeff Goldblue, and countless others that have saved the world against aliens, dinosaurs or supervillains, the mainframe is the true hero in every plot line. This presentation is either going to make you laugh out loud in stitches, or make you cringe and never want to see it again. Either way you’ll hopefully remember it for the right reasons and come away reflecting on what motivated you to enter mainframe computing and have collected a fresh to-do list of movies to catch up with and videos to watch next time you’re struggling to read a syslog or debug an amend.

The most obvious answer to effective testing is to make sure each unit test is performed correctly. In the landscape of enterprise systems compromised of cloud providers, z/OS, and many middleware, integration, and development programs, it becomes a complex web that can seem impossible to connect and test all together. There is an answer, and that involves understanding applications, what areas could easily have integration tests stitched together, and how to implement testing as a service within your organisation. This session will cover the technical details to understand more about application integration testing, how Galasa, an open-source project, could be implemented at scale and worked examples of integration testing to help make it easier to scale testing at your organisation.
